Central Illinois Regional Airport Earns StormReady® Certification from the National Weather Service
Tuesday, 08 May 2012 16:25

National Weather Service LogoThe Central Illinois Regional Airport (CIRA) in Bloomington has received its certification as a StormReady® Community commercial site. While many laws and regulations exist to help emergency managers with other emergencies, there are few guidelines dealing with hazardous weather operations. Recognizing this need, the National Weather Service (NWS) developed StormReady® to help cities, counties, and towns implement procedures to reduce the potential for disastrous, weather-related consequences. StormReady® helps community leaders and emergency managers strengthen their local hazardous weather operations by giving communities the skills and education to survive severe weather - both before and during the event.

Chris Miller, the Warning Coordination Meteorologist for the NWS office in Lincoln, noted that the StormReady® certification is clearly the result of the leadership, hard work, and commitment by [the staff] at the Central Illinois Regional Airport for the safety of their customers and employees.

The McLean County EMA wishes to offer its congratulations to the CIRA for achieving the StormReady® certification.

National Severe Weather Preparedness Week
Sunday, 22 April 2012 17:28

National Severe Weather Preparedness Week 2012The first ever National Severe Weather Preparedness Week is April 22 - 28. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) have partnered together to raise awareness about severe weather threats and to ask each person across the country to “Be a Force of Nature” by knowing their risk, taking action, and being an example.

Being a force of nature means pledging to prepare. It also means being connected to others and inspiring them to act. Research shows that people are most likely to prepare when they observe the preparations taken by others. Mobile technology and social media offer great opportunities to do just that. When you are aware of danger, take action and then send a message to save a life.

Building a Weather-Ready Nation requires the action of every person and community. This Presidential Message emphasizes weather-readiness as a national priority. Together we can transform the way the United States responds to severe weather and save more lives.

Lieutenant Brad Smith

** UPDATE **
Brad has elected to remain with the McLean County EMA through late summer. He will retain his current rank and position until he concludes his service with the Agency.

Life changes can sometimes come about with very short notice, as was the case for Lieutenant Brad Smith. While some may believe that Friday the 13th brings about bad luck, it will be a day Brad remembers for the rest of his life as one of the most exciting. Brad received his medical school acceptance letter from the Ross University School of Medicine on Friday, April 13, and will be departing in two weeks to begin this next step in his professional pursuits.

Brad joined the McLean County Emergency Management Agency in 2010 and immediately impressed us with his background, emergency management acumen, and leadership skills. These traits, as well as the respect he fostered among our staff members and his ability to advance the emergency management discipline in McLean County, earned him an initial promotion to the rank of Sergeant and a subsequent promotion to his current rank.
